FIA DETECTS RS100 BN ONLINE FRAUD

KARACHI: Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has detected an online fraud of Rs100 billion using a cryptocurrency and issued notice to the local representative of Binance, ARY NEWS reported.

Sharing details of the fraud, Additional Director of the FIA cybercrime wing Imran Riaz said that those involved in the online fraud transferred the money abroad via cryptocurrency.

“We launched a probe after receiving complaints regarding a fraud involving billions of rupees being committed using nine online applications,” he said and added that they had sought answers in this regard from a representative of the cryptocurrency in Pakistan.

He shared that people invested between US$100 to US$80,000 in fraud applications. “Those who developed these apps were linked to cryptocurrency,” the FIA official said.

He said that they have sought details of all those linked to the fraud with the Binance cryptocurrency and their crypto accounts would be suspended.

The FIA official further shared that cryptocurrency is being used in money laundering and terror financing.

NAB to present Talpur before the court as remand ends today

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) will present today former president Asif Ali Zardari’s sister Faryal Talpur before an accountability court in a case pertaining to laundering of billions of rupees through fake bank accounts.

The PPP leader will be presented before Accountability Judge Muhammad Arshad Malik on completion of her 9-day physical remand.

Sources say NAB will likely demand an extension in her remand for further questioning in connection with an investigation into the scam.

At the previous hearing on June 15, the court had remanded Talpur in the NAB custody on 9-day physical remand until June 24.

NAB prosecutor Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi requested the court to remand her in the bureau’s custody for interrogation.

He contended before the court that the PPP leader was arrested on June 14 in pursuance of her arrest warrants issued on June 13 as she was the prime accused in the fake bank accounts case.

Her Islamabad residence has been declared a sub-jail where two female officials of the bureau have been posted, he added.

The prosecutor informed that suspicious transactions of billions of rupees had been made in the bank account of the Zardari Group from fake bank accounts, adding that the account was being operated by Talpur.

Advocate Farooq H Naek, representing the PPP leader, opposed the NAB plea for physical remand.
